Paphos City
Aristotelis Demetriou, born in 1962 in Paphos, stands as a notable figure in contemporary Cypriot art, distinguished by his exploration of the landscapes of Cyprus. Educated at the Athens School of Fine Arts under the mentorship of esteemed painters Panayiotis Tetsis and Dimitris Mytaras, Demetriou's practice embodies a rich dialogue between the natural beauty of his homeland and the human presence within it.
Demetriou skilfully captures the essence of Cyprus's landscapes, demonstrating a keen eye for colour, form, and light. His canvases vividly depict the sun-drenched shores, rugged cliffs, and crystalline waters that characterize the island's coastal terrain. Drawing inspiration from his deep affinity for the seaside, Demetriou's recent work portrays women immersed in the tranquility of coastal scenes. Positioned at doorways that seamlessly blend interior and exterior realms or sunbathing on the coastal line, these figures beckon viewers to reflect on the intersections of personal introspection and communal observation.
Demetriou served on the Board of E.KA.TE for several years, and was a member of the committee for the selection of artworks for placement in public buildings and the State Gallery. Additionally, Demetriou is the leader of IWS Cyprus (International Watercolour Society) and has had 16 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions across Cyprus, Athens, Rome, London, Switzerland, Finland, and Hungary.
